PERFECTIONISM
Perfectionism Counselling in Cambridge
Perfectionism can look like having high standards, being very driven, or wanting to do things well, but underneath it often feels much more pressured, exhausting, and hard to switch off from. It can leave you feeling as though nothing you do is ever quite good enough, even when others see your efforts very differently.
I offer counselling in Cambridge for perfectionism, anxiety, self-criticism, burnout, and low self-worth in a warm, supportive, and non-judgemental space.
How Perfectionism Can Affect Daily Life
For many people, perfectionism shows up as:
Overthinking and self-doubt
Difficulty making decisions
Fear of getting things wrong
Constant checking or correcting
Struggling to rest without guilt
Difficulty delegating
Feeling pressure to achieve or perform
Harsh self-criticism
Feeling that your worth depends on productivity or success
Even success can feel temporary, quickly followed by self-criticism or the sense that you should be doing more.
Perfectionism and the Need for Control
At its core, perfectionism is often closely linked with a need for control. When things have felt uncertain, inconsistent, or emotionally unsafe in the past, striving to be perfect can develop as a way of creating a sense of stability or predictability.
If mistakes once led to criticism, rejection, unpredictability, or feeling emotionally unsafe, perfectionism can become a way of trying to prevent those experiences from happening again. In this way, perfectionism can be understood as a protective strategy rather than simply a personality trait.
Fear of Failure, Shame, and Self-Worth
Perfectionism is often trying to protect you from difficult feelings such as shame, fear of failure, rejection, or not feeling “good enough”.
It can also be a way of trying to earn acceptance, approval, or love, particularly if these once felt conditional. While perfectionism may have developed as a helpful coping strategy at some point, over time it can become exhausting, rigid, and deeply self-critical.
Emotionally, perfectionism can feel like being on constant alert. There may be:
A strong inner critic
Anxiety and tension
Difficulty relaxing
Constant pressure or overwhelm
Fear of disappointing others
A persistent feeling of “I’m not enough as I am”
Therapy for Perfectionism in Cambridge
Therapy can help you begin to understand where these patterns come from and what they may be trying to protect you from.
As a pluralistic and trauma-informed therapist, I tailor therapy to the individual. Together, we can explore:
Fear of failure and rejection
Anxiety and overthinking
Shame and self-criticism
Perfectionism and burnout
The need for control
Self-worth and identity
Emotional safety and past experiences
Boundaries and self-compassion
Rather than removing your standards or ambition, therapy is often about loosening the need for control, softening harsh self-criticism, and developing a more compassionate and flexible relationship with yourself.
Over time, therapy can support you to feel more able to rest, tolerate uncertainty and mistakes, and live with greater ease, balance, and self-compassion.
